LOS ANGELES -- 89.9 KCRW and the Ford Amphitheatre present the critically acclaimed trip hop group Pacha Massive and Argentinean cool electronica and Spanish guitar sensation Federico Aubele in a rare, very intimate concert at the Ford Amphitheatre on September 26 at 8 p.m. for an audience of only 1200. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the L.A. based Community Bridges Program, which provides accessibility to the arts for youth in under-represented communities.

Singer-songwriter Federico Aubele blends a variety of musical genres and styles: Jamaican dub and reggae, American ambient and hip-hop, Mexican bolero, and Argentine tango. Produced by and on the same label (ESL or Eighteenth Street Lounge) as Thievery Corporation, Aubele was last seen in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl with Thievery Corporation, in June of 2008. He returns to Los Angeles for an up close and personal concert of hypnotic guitar and sultry vocals.

Aubele's latest album "Panamericana" was voted "One of the Top 5 Albums of the Year" by the Los Angeles Times. He describes his music as a synthesis of styles from across the Americas. Pacha Massive will be making their 3rd and their LARGEST Los Angeles appearance at the Ford Amphitheatre, having performed live in L.A. only twice at small venues. This rare performance will feature a funky fusion of traditional Latin rhythms like Colombian cumbia, Dominican palo, and Afro-Cuban son. Their rhythmic blends of funky Latin jams with Jamaican reggae-dancehall, dub and drum-and-bass has made them a New York club favorite.

Straight from the boogie-down Bronx, Pacha Massive (from Pachamama meaning "Mother Earth") is the creative collaboration between Dominican-born Nova (keys, guitar, writer and producer) and Colombian-born Maya (writer and bass). the duo met in New York while working on a project with Ivan Benavides (Sidestepper, Bloque, Carlos Vives) where a creative collaboration between the two led to the formation of Pacha Massive in 2005.

Pacha Massive has been making a buzz since playing their first gig at Madison Square Garden opening for Aterciopelados. DJ Nova (writer/producer, King Chango, SiS?, Om) on keys/guitar and Maya on bass make up the core of Pacha Massive, often sharing the stage with up to seven or eight collaborators. They are the first U.S. group to be signed by Nacional Records.

Both members of the group are Latinos, from Colombia and the Dominican Republic, now living in the U.S. and sharing a common passion for music. Their music is a reflection of this exciting generation: a melting pot of genres, languages, backgrounds and styles.

"When I came to the U.S. I got my first instrument on my 15th birthday, a drum set, and as the years passed I picked up guitar, bass, keys, percussion and finally the instrument that allowed me to solidify my ideas in a flexible and efficient way?.a Mac," said Nova. He describes his musical influences from people "who have influenced me in the way I make music" citing Bruce Lee, Benjamin Franklin and Leonardo DaVinci as "people who had a bigger perspective and were more holistic in their craft."

Nova's Dominican roots exposed him to a lot of traditional music like palo in addition to music from England and the U.S. played on Dominican radio. As a youth he built instruments out of whatever he could find, using cans for drums, 2 X 4s, and rubber bands.

Maya was born in Colombia and raised in New York City's Washington Heights. Her love of music also started at an early age with the violin, and later became a career choice when she went to Cuba after graduating to study double bass. Her musical influences range from classical, salsa, bolero and traditional Colombian folklore to reggae, house and artists like Manu Chao, Hector Lavoe and Sidestepper.

Federico Aubele is an Argentine singer-songwriter whose music blends a variety of genres and styles: Jamaican dub and reggae, American ambient and hip-hop, Mexican bolero, and Argentine tango. In 2006, he played at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. His song "Esta Noche" was featured in the 5th season of Alias (TV series). After Berlin, he moved to Barcelona where he began working on his new album, Panamericana (a title to indicate the many musical influences and in part named after the Pan-American Highway), which was released on September 18, 2007, also produced by Thievery Corporation. Proceeds from this event will go to the Community Bridges, an outreach and audience development program dedicated to exposing underrepresented communities to the Performing Arts. Through this program, Ford performers conduct workshops at 16 youth and social service centers based in Asian Pacific Islander and Latino communities within the LA County. Participants and their families are invited to several events throughout the Ford season, with free transportation, tickets, and interactive artist workshops provided by the Ford in collaboration with the performers.

Delaware Fertility Center Tackles Failed IVF and Unnecessary IVF With Program Targeting Unexplained and Unexplored Infertility

Fertility doctors at Reproductive Associates of Delaware (RAD) are alarmed about the rising tide of unsuccessful in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments occurring throughout the United States and the world, and are recommending closer diagnostic scrutiny of patients who have failed IVF or are pursuing IVF unnecessarily. They have initiated a new pilot program called FITS ? Failed IVF, Trial of Surgery.

"IVF is an important and successful treatment for those who truly require it," stated Ronald F. Feinberg MD, PhD, a reproductive endocrinologist who has directed RAD's IVF Program since 1997. "But many women are failing IVF, or possibly don't even need IVF, because their underlying disease was not diagnosed or treated thoroughly."

Several common diseases can block embryo implantation and hurt pregnancy chances, including endometriosis, uterine polyps, fibroids, and diseased fallopian tubes. Pelvic adhesions can also restrict blood flow to the ovaries and interfere with normal egg development. Prior cesarean sections and other major surgeries can often cause adhesions, leading to infertility. Numerous published studies have shown that minimally invasive, outpatient treatment by highly experienced surgeons performing hysteroscopy and laparoscopy will often enhance fertility or eliminate infertility.

"Most women have infertility because of these problems, but many IVF centers tend to minimize this information," stated Barbara A. McGuirk, MD, also a reproductive endocrinologist and director of RAD's reproductive surgery program since 1995. "When we perform detailed and thorough evaluation of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic structures we frequently identify and treat diseases causing infertility. Our approach includes an expert 2-physician team, excellent anesthesia, and surgery performed through tiny openings in the skin that don't require stitches."

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), many female infertility cases are 'unexplained'. "Unexplained infertility in women is often really unexplored infertility," noted Dr. McGuirk, "and we find that many women and babies are being shortchanged and harmed by premature pursuit of IVF treatments. Many of our patients who might have been pushed into IVF elsewhere are actually able to become pregnant at our center without IVF."

The RAD team anticipates that their FITS pilot program will help estimate the scope of the problem related to unsuccessful and unnecessary IVF treatments. Their goal is to identify patients who have been unsuccessful with IVF outside of RAD and have not had underlying diseases evaluated or thoroughly treated. The RAD team is particularly interested in evaluating women before or after IVF who have been labeled with 'unexplained infertility'.

As part of the FITS program, prior treatment records will be carefully reviewed and those patients interested in FITS will be thoroughly informed about their options for enhanced diagnosis and treatments. Results from the program will be compiled in an ongoing fashion. One future goal is to perform a prospective study evaluating the impact of FITS on fertility outcomes.

IVF outcomes are submitted and published by most U.S. clinics in conjunction with the CDC for the public to read. "Some of the CDC data is misleading," noted Dr. Feinberg, "because it is very difficult to know which patients truly needed IVF versus those who could have benefitted from non-IVF treatments. Patients who achieve pregnancy following hysteroscopy and/or laparoscopy are not included in the CDC data."

Of all IVF pregnancies achieved in Delaware, 85% were conceived at RAD's center based on analysis of published CDC data. Many of these successful and lower risk singleton pregnancies encompassed the FITS care model, since RAD's results included many patients who had previously failed IVF elsewhere. As additional evidence for enhanced embryo implantation, RAD's single embryo blastocyst transfer approach has consistently yielded many pregnancies and one of the lowest multiple gestation rates in the U.S.

The RAD group is also actively evaluating chromosome abnormalities in blastocysts that appear normal, but likely lead to failed implantation or miscarriage. Their success and outcomes with preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) have been presented at national meetings in 2010 and 2011 of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

The RAD physician team has two other reproductive endocrinologists ? Dr. Adrienne Neithardt and Dr. George Kovalevsky ? and the four doctors consult with patients daily at three different locations in Delaware ? Wilmington, Dover, and within their main offices and IVF center in Newark on the campus of Christiana Care Health System. The doctors are also attending physicians and active educators for Christiana Care obstetrics/gynecology residents and Jefferson medical students.

The program, in which celebrities from all walks of life lend their name to Best Friends' national work on behalf of homeless pets, is in full swing with the introduction of its own web site and ambassadors will be at work on many projects in 2012.

In the past year, Travis Clark of the ?We the Kings? rock band appeared in a humorous video PSA as part of the organization?s ?Invisible Dogs? campaign, designed to get people thinking about the homeless dogs in local shelters waiting to be seen and adopted.
