Ideapad z570 touchpad not working after kernel upgrade

This is probably a duplicate question but I'm not sure the other was answered and it was for a different machine. I'm on 12.04 LTS and, after a recent update to kernel 3.5.0-31, the trackpad on my Lenovo Ideapad z570 stopped working. Originally it moved but would not left-click. I installed the xinput/edgers repository and rebooted only to find the OS hanging on a black screen preventing me from logging in. I used recovery mode to update and fix packages and had to purge nvidia and apt-get xorg in order to get past the black screen. Now, after these command-line updates, I am on kernel 3.5.0-32 (presumably released in the last 48 hours) but my trackpad will not move the pointer. The right pad button will bring up a context menu (same as F10) on the desktop so it appears to be working but it will not move. I was tempted to upgrade to 12.10 only to be told that my hardware would not support Unity and was advised to stick with 12.04 LTS. I will happily do this if I can get the mouse working. I have been using Ubuntu for about 6 years now and I would like to stick with it but I don't want to buy a new machine every 2 years just to keep ahead of deprecated features :( Can anyone help?
Just noticed several files in /var/crash called _usr_lib_nux_unity_support_test.NNN.crash - are these relevant?
