Grant Funding for Defibrillators now Available to Everyone

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 2, 2006

Generous donations, corporate backing, and AED manufacturer sponsors have joined forces to give everyone the opportunity to afford a life saving portable AED machine. http://www.AEDGrant.com is launching a nationwide program that enables private and public businesses, agencies, institutions, and even individuals to apply for grant funding toward the purchase of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The sponsors of AEDGrant.com would like to see that portable AED machines become as commonplace as fire extinguishers.

The unfortunate truth is that almost every citizen of the United States, has been affected by Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Sudden Cardiac Arrest claims over 330,000 lives every year in the U.S. alone, making it the leading cause of natural death. Until the introduction of portable AED machines, a sudden cardiac arrest victim?s chance of survival was extremely slim.

According to Matthew Henry of American CPR Training, the nations only centrally managed CPR, First Aid, and AED safety training group and a sponsor of AEDGrant.com, ?survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests are estimated to be as low as 1-5%, but overall, when defibrillation is administered within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, survival rates can increase up to an astonishing 74%.? Because of these increased rates of survival, ?We were the first national training organization to incorporate the ABCD?s (Airway, Breathing, Circulation & Defibrillation) into every CPR course we offer throughout the US. We now also co-sponsor this AED Grant program as part of our continuing commitment to AED education and deployment.?

Along with providing funding, the program also aims to educate the public about their AED options. Current supplier sponsors include Philips Medical, Defibtech LLC, and Medtronic Inc. Philips manufactures the HeartStart OnSite AED. The HeartStart OnSite is the only AED on the market that is FDA approved for over-the-counter sale, and it is the recommended defibrillator of AEDGrant.com and program co-sponsor, American CPR Training. Philips is at the forefront of the market because of their commitment to providing Defibrillators that are usable and accessible to the layperson. According to Deborah DiSanzo, vice president and general manager for cardiac resuscitation at Philips Medical Systems, ?In pursuing our mission to save more lives from sudden cardiac arrest, Philips is committed to making defibrillators broadly accessible, whether in the home or in public settings where people work and play. Offering the HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator without a prescription further establishes Philips at the forefront of removing barriers to saving more lives.?

Though the HeartStart OnSite is available without a prescription, medical oversight is still recommended and the FDA requires a physician?s prescription for all other defibrillator models. Placing a defibrillator is just one step in promoting public access defibrillation programs. Stat Pads, LLC is providing sponsorship of the grant program by offering free prescription services to all grant participants. ?Stat Pads? mission is to improve the health and safety of our communities through the expansion of PAD (Public Access Defibrillation) programs and the promotion of AED use,? says Richard LeDuc of Stat Pads, LLC. ? Our physicians work closely with the AED program manager and local EMS providers to ensure the entire program is implemented and maintained at the highest quality standard. This close involvement and supervision increases the chances for successful responses to sudden cardiac arrest events and protects employers as well as public facilities from any potential liability.?

Applying for Grant Funding is as simple as visiting http://www.AEDGrant.com and downloading an easy one-page application. The application review process takes 5 to 7 business days. Upon approval of the application, participants are notified of the amount of funding that has been awarded.
